Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha -
- Ekadashi Vrat Kathas
Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The Story or Katha of this Jaya Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:
Yudhisthira Maharaj said, "O Sri Krishna, all glory to You! You have explained to me the auspicious day known as Sat-tila Ekadashi, which occurs during the dark fortnight (Krishna paksha) of the month of Magha (January-February). Now explain to me Ekadashi which occurs in the light fortnight (Shukla paksha) of this month. Who is the presiding deity to be worshiped and how should he be honoured?"
Lord Sri Krishna replied:
"O Yudhisthira, this Ekadashi removes all sinful reactions and demonic influences that may affect the spirit soul. It is known as Jaya Ekadashi. One who fasts on this auspicious day is freed from ghosts. I am explaining here a wonderful historical episode related to this Ekadashi which I have already narrated in Padma Purana.
Long ago, when Lord Indra ruled his heavenly kingdom, all the devas who lived there were happy and contented. In the forest of Nandana, Indra drank ambrosia whenever he had it and enjoyed the service of the Apsaras who danced ecstatically for his joy.
Many singers led by Pushpadanta sang with sweet voices. Indra's lead musician Chitrasena was there with her husband Malini and handsome son Malyavan. An Apsara named Pushpavati was very fond of Malyavan; indeed, Cupid's sharp arrows pierced the core of his heart. Her beautiful body and mesmerizing eyebrow movements mesmerized Malyavan.
Seeing Pushpavati, Malyavan was immediately enchanted. They came with other performers to please Lord Indra by singing and dancing, but because they were so enthralled with each other, they could not sing and dance properly in front of Lord Indra.
Lord Indra immediately understood the source of the mistakes. Because of the discord in the musical performance, he became very angry and cursed them both to suffer from pisachs (goblins) in the earthly world.
Malyavan and Pushpavati simultaneously fell from the beautiful Nandana forest of the heavenly realm to the peak of the Himalayas on earth. Being greatly afflicted by the severe curse of Lord Indra and their celestial intelligence greatly weakened, they lost their sense of taste and smell. It was so cold in the Himalayan ice that they could not even sleep. As they wandered aimlessly, they suffered more and more, even though they were in a cave, their teeth chattered and they were afraid of the snow and frost.
To their good fortune it happened that this very day was the auspicious Jaya Ekadashi, the fortnightly Ekadashi of the light fortnight of the Magha moon. Due to their misery, they did not drink water, or even eat all available fruits and leaves and unknowingly observed Ekadashi with a complete fast. Very tired, both Malyavan and Pushpavati collapsed under the Pipal tree.
The night was even colder and more miserable than the day. They hugged each other for warmth. They suffered the mighty curse of Indra the whole night. However, due to the grace of fasting, they unknowingly observed Jaya Ekadashi and as they stayed awake through the night, they were blessed.
When Dvadashi dawned the next day, Maljavan and Pushpavati lost their demonic forms and were again beautiful celestial beings dressed in beautiful clothes. The celestial plane (vimana) arrived for them. The couple boarded a beautiful plane and headed straight for the heavenly regions. Maljavan and Pushpavati reached Amravati, the capital of Lord Indra, immediately went before Indradev and bowed before him.
Lord Indra was surprised to see them transform into their original form so quickly after he cursed them. Indradev asked them, "What meritorious deeds have you done? Who freed you from my curse?"
Malyavan replied,
"O sir, due to the powerful influence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the supreme grace of Lord Sri Krishna and also the powerful influence of Jaya Ekadashi, we have been freed from such a state of suffering as the pisachha yoni. We. did devotional service to Lord Vishnu unknowingly (ajnata sukruti) keeping the most precious day for Him; we are fortunately restored to our former position."
Indradev then said, "Having served the Supreme Lord by observing Ekadashi, you have also become adorable to me because you are now completely cleansed of sin."
It is said that if one fasts on this day, one will attain Lord Vishnu's abode even though he has not completed the second vrata of the year.
