Mohini Ekadashi Vrat Katha

The Kahta or story of this Mohini Ekadashi is as follows:

Sri Yudhisthira Maharaja said, "O Janardana, what is the name of the Ekadashi that occurs during the bright fortnight (sukla paksha) of the month of Vaisakha (April-May)? How to observe it properly? Tell me all those details."

The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna replied, "O blessed son of Dharma, what Vasishtha Muni once told Lord Ramachandra, I am now telling you. Please listen to me carefully. "Lord Ramachandra asked Vasishtha Muni, "O great sage, I would like to hear about the best of all days of fasting, which destroys all sins and sorrows. I have suffered long enough to be separated from my beloved Sita, so I want to hear from you how to end the suffering.

"Vasishtha Muni replied: "O Lord Rama, O you whose intelligence is so sharp that by simply remembering your name one can cross the ocean of the material world. You asked me to benefit all mankind and fulfill everyone's wishes. I am now describing a day of fasting that purifies the whole world.

“O Rama, this day is known as Vaisakha Ekadashi, which falls on Dvadashi. It removes all sins and is known as Mohini Ekadashi. Indeed, O dear Rama, the merit of this Ekadashi frees the fortunate soul who observes it from the web of illusion. Therefore, if you want to alleviate your sufferings, observe this auspicious Ekadashi perfectly, as it removes all obstacles from the path and alleviates the greatest miseries. Please listen as I describe its glories, for one who even hears of this auspicious Ekadashi, the greatest of sins will be removed.

On the banks of the river Sarasvati once stood a beautiful city called Bhadravati, ruled by king Dyutiman. O Rama, that firm, truthful and very intelligent king was born in the Lunar dynasty (Chandra-vamsa). In his kingdom lived a merchant named Dhanapala who had a lot of grain and money. He was also very pious. Dhanapala arranged for the digging of lakes, the construction of sacrificial arenas and the cultivation of beautiful gardens for the benefit of all the residents of Bhadravati. He was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and had five sons: Sumana, Dyutiman, Medhavi, Sukriti and Dhrishthabuddhi.

"Unfortunately, his son Dhrishthabuddhi was always involved in very sinful activities such as sleeping with prostitutes and associating with similarly degraded people. He engaged in illicit sex, gambling and many other sinful activities. He disrespected the demigods (devas), Brahmins, ancestors and other elders of the community and the guests of his family. This mean-spirited Dhrishthabuddhi used his father's wealth indiscriminately, always eating untouchable food and drinking too much alcohol.

One day, Dhanapala threw Dhrishthabuddhi out of his house after seeing him walking on the road hand in hand with a well-known prostitute. From then on, all the relatives of Dhrishthabuddhi were very critical of him and distanced themselves from him as well. When he sold all his inherited jewelry and fell into poverty, the prostitute also left him and insulted him for his poverty.

"Dhrishthabuddhi was now full of anxiety and also hungry. He thought, "What shall I do? Where should I turn? How can I support myself? Then he started stealing. The king's soldiers arrested him, but when they learned who it was and that his father was the famous Dhanapala, they released him. He was captured and released so many times. But finally, tired of his arrogance and total disregard for others and their property, the badly behaved Dhrishthabuddhi was arrested, handcuffed and then beaten. After whipping him, the king's marshals warned him: "O evildoer, you have no place in this kingdom.

"But his father freed Dhrishthabuddhi from his trials and he then immediately afterwards went into a dense forest. He wandered hither and thither hungry and thirsty and suffering much. Finally he began to kill jungle animals for food, lions, deer, wild boars and even wolves. His bow was always ready, his was a quiver full of arrows on his shoulder. He also killed many birds such as cuckoos, peacocks, storks, doves and doves. He unhesitatingly killed many species of birds and animals to maintain his sinful lifestyle, and the sinful results piled up more and more every day. Because of his past sins, he was now immersed in an ocean of great sins that was so unceasing that he seemed unable to get out.

"Dhrishthabuddhi was always unhappy and distressed, but one day in the month of Vaisakha he happened to enter the holy ashram of Kaundinya Muni because of some of his past merits. The great sage had just finished his bath in the Ganges and water was still dripping from him. Dhrishthabuddhi had the great fortune to touch a few drops of water that fell from the wet clothes of the great sage. Dhrishthabuddhi was immediately freed from his ignorance and his sinful reactions diminished. Dhrishthabuddhi paid humble obeisance to Kaundinya Muni and prayed to him with joined palms:

"O great brahmin, tell me about the atonement that I can perform without much effort. I have committed so many sins in my life and they have now made me very poor.

"The great Rishi replied: "O son, listen with great attention, for by hearing me your life will change and you will be freed from all your remaining sins. The bright fortnight of Vaisakha (April-May) of this month sees the holy Mohini Ekadasi, which has the power to cancel sins as great and painful as Mount Sumeru. If you follow my advice and faithfully observe the fast on this Ekadashi, which is so dear to Lord Hari, you will be freed from the sinful reactions of many, many births.

"Hearing these words with great joy, Dhrishthabuddhi vowed to fast on Mohini Ekadashi according to the instructions of the sages. O best of kings, O Ramachandra Bhagavan, by fasting completely on Mohini Ekadashi, the once sinful Dhrishthabuddhi, the merchant's son Dhanapala, became sinless. Later he attained the beautiful transcendental form and finally free from all hindrances, the carrier of Lord Vishnu Garuda rode him to the Supreme Abode of the Lord.

"O Ramachandra, the fast day of Mohini Ekadasi removes the darkest illusory attachments of material existence. So there is no better fast day in all the three worlds than this."

Lord Sri Krishna concluded, "And thus, O Yudhishthira, there is no place of pilgrimage, no sacrifice, no charity that can give even one-sixteenth of the merit that my faithful devotee receives by observing Mohini Ekadashi. And he who hears and studies the splendor of Mohini Ekadashi achieves his merit by donating a thousand cows to charity.

Thus ends the story of the glory of Vaisakha Shukla Ekadashi or Mohini Ekadasi from the Kurma Purana.
