Mokshada Ekadashi Vrat Katha -- Ekadashi Vrat Katha!

The Story or Katha of this Mokshada Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:

Yudhishthira Maharaj said, "O Krishna, for the benefit of all living beings, tell me the name of the Ekadashi that occurs during the bright fortnight of the month Margashirsha (November-December) and removes all sins? How is it observed?"

Lord Krishna replied:

"Dear Yudhishthira, I am telling you about this Ekadashi, which is famous as Mokshada because it cleanses the faithful devotee from all sinful reactions and liberates. The God worshiped today is Lord Damodara. He should be worshipped with incense, with ghee lamp, fragrant flowers and Tulas buds.

I will tell you the auspicious story of this Ekadashi. Only by hearing this can one attain the benefits of performing the horse sacrifice. Thanks to this merit, the ancestors who went to hell can go to heaven.

Once there was a beautiful city called Champakanagar, where devout Vaishnavas lived. Maharaj Vaikhanasa ruled his subjects as if they were his own children. Brahmins were all experts in Vedic knowledge. One night the king had a dream where his father was tortured on an infernal planet ruled by Yamaraj. The next morning, Maharaj Vaikhanasa described to his council of ministers what he had seen in his dream.

He told them that his father had called him to free him from this hellish state. He said that even his own wife and sons became a source of unhappiness after seeing their father undergo the torture. He asked them to tell him what charity, what fasting, austerity or what else he might have to do to free his father from this pain.

The ministers replied: "There is an ashram of Parvata Muni in a mountain forest nearby." He is a Trikala jnani (he knows everything past, present and future) and can help you.”

On receiving this advice, the suffering king immediately went to Parvata Muni's ashram. The king saw Parvata Muni sitting among the sages, adorned with hundreds of tilaks (of all authorized sampradayas) like another Brahma or Vyasa.

Maharaj Vaikhanasa bowed to the sage. As the king sat, the sage asked him about the welfare of his kingdom. The king replied: “Through your grace, O great sage, my kingdom will prosper. But a problem arose and to solve it I turned to you for help."

Parvata Muni then closed her eyes and meditated on the past, present and future of the king. After a few moments she said: "Your father is suffering the consequences of Granda Sin. In his previous life he quarreled with his wife and enjoyed sexually forcing a woman during her period. Your father is suffering now because of this sin."

King Vaikhanasa then asked: "How can I free my father from this condition?"

Parvata Muni replied: "During the bright fortnight of the month Margashirsha, Ekadashi occurs. called Mokshada. If you follow it with a complete fast and give the merit directly to your suffering father, he will be freed from his suffering.

After thanking Parvata Muni, Maharaj Vaikhanasa returned to his palace. When the bright part of the Margashirsha month arrived, Maharaj waited for the arrival of the Vaikhanasa Ekadashi-tithi. With full faith he observed the Ekadashi fast with his wife, children and other relatives. He attributed this fast to his father. The messengers of the Devas praised the king's father and sent him to the heavenly region.

Finally, the king's father reached the heavenly realm, where he could once again serve Krishna as a devotee with his newly acquired merit and in time return home, back to God.

O Yudhishthira, whoever strictly observes the holy Mokshada Ekadashi attains complete and total liberation after death. There is no better fasting day than this fortnight of light Ekadashi in the month of Margashirsha. Anyone who faithfully observes this fast gets special merits that can elevate him from the hellish life to the heavenly planets, and he who observes Ekadashi for his spiritual benefit is exalted to return back to divinity and never return to this material world. ”

Thus ends the description of the magnificence of Margashirsha-Shukla Ekadashi or Mokshada Ekadashi of the Brahmanda Purana.
