Papamochani Ekadashi Vrat Katha -
- Ekadashi Vrat Kathas
Papamochani Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The Kahta or story of Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:
Sri Yudhisthira Maharaja said, "O Supreme Lord, I have heard from you the explanation of the amalaki ekadashi which takes place in the bright fortnight of the month of Phalguna (February-March) and now I want to hear about the ekadashi which takes place in the dark fortnight of the month of Chaitra (March-April) What is its name, O Lord, and what results can be obtained by observing it?"
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, replied, "O best of kings, for the benefit of all I am pleased to describe to you the glories of this Ekadashi known as Papamochani. The story of this Ekadashi had once been told to the Emperor Mandhata by Lomasa Rishi. King Mandhata spoke to the Rishi: "O great sage, for the benefit of all people, tell me the name of the Ekadashi occurring during the dark fortnight of Chaitra month and also explain the merits of observing that Ekadashi ."
Lomasa Rishi replied, "The Ekadashi occurring during the dark fortnight of Chaitra month is called Papamochani. For a faithful devotee, it removes the influence of ghosts and demons. O lion among men, this Ekadashi also rewards the eight perfections of life, fulfills all desires, purifies the life of all sinful reactions and makes one perfectly virtuous. "
"Now listen to the historical story of this Ekadashi and Chitraratha, the chief of the Gandharvas (heavenly musicians). In the spring season, Chitraratha, accompanied by heavenly dancing maidens, once came to a beautiful forest full of various flowers. There he and the Maidens joined the Gandharvas and many Kinnaras and Lord Indra, the king of heaven, who liked to go there. All felt that there was no better garden than this forest. Many sages were also there in escape and penance. The demigods especially enjoy visiting this heavenly garden during the months of Chaitra and Vaisakha (April-May). ""There lived a great sage named Medhavi in the forest and very attractive dancing girls were always trying to seduce him. A famous girl, Manjughosha, devised many ways to woo the exalted Muni, but out of great respect for the sage and his power, which he had attained after years of austerity, she did not come very close to him. At a place which was two miles distant from the sage, she pitched a tent and began to sing very sweetly while playing the tamboura. Cupid himself was delighted to see and hear her acting so beautifully and smelled her sandal paste. He remembered his own unfortunate experience with Lord Shiva and decided to take revenge by seducing Medhavi."
"Using Manjughosha's eyebrows as a bow, her eyes as a bowstring, her eyes as an arrow and her chest as a target, Cupid approached Medhavi to lure him to break his trance and vows. In other words, Cupid took Manjughosha as his assistant and when she looked at this powerful and attractive young sage, she too burned with lust. Seeing that he was very intelligent and learned, wearing a pure white Brahmin thread on his shoulder, holding a sannyasi staff in his hand and sitting beautifully in the asrama of Chyavana Rishi, Manjughosha came before him. "She began to sing on the spot and the small bells from the belt around her ankles along with the bangles on her wrists created a delightful musical symphony. The sage Medhavi was mesmerized. He understood that this beautiful maiden wanted to unite with him, and at that moment Cupid increased his attraction to Manjughosha, unleashing his powerful weapons of taste, touch, sight, smell and sound. Slowly Manjughosha approached Medhavi, her body movements and beautiful expressions attracted him. She gracefully dropped the tamboura and embraced the sage with both hands, just as a creeper wraps itself around a sturdy tree. Ready, Medhavi gave up his meditation and decided to play sports with her, instantly repulsed by the purity of her heart and mind.
Forgetting even the difference between night and day, he went out to play sports with her for a long, long time. "Seeing that the sanctity of the young yogi had seriously declined, Manjughosha decided to leave him and return home. She said, "Oh great One, let me go home." "Medhavi replied: "But you have just arrived, beauty. Please stay with me at least until tomorrow.” “Fearing the yogic power of the sage, Manjughosha stayed with Medhavi exactly fifty-seven years, nine months and three days, but all this time seemed to Medhavi a moment. She asked again to him: "Let me go." Medhavi replied, “Oh dear, listen to me. Stay with me one more night and then you can leave tomorrow morning. Stay with me till I have done my morning duties and chanted the holy Gayatri Mantra. Wait until then.” Manjughosha was still in awe of the sage's great yogic power, but she forced a smile and said, “How long will it take you to complete the morning hymn and ritual? Be compassionate and think about all the time you've already spent with me. The sage thought of his years with Manjughosha and then said with great wonder. I have spent more than fifty-seven years with you! His eyes turned red and began to emit sparks. He now regarded Manjughhosha as death personified and the destruction of his spiritual life. You cruel woman! You have turned all your hard earned results into ashes! Trembling with anger, he cursed Manjughhosha: "O sinner, O hard-hearted, vile! You know only sin! May all the terrible fate be yours! O scoundrel, I curse you to become a pishacha!"
"Cursed by the sage Medhavi, the beautiful Manjughosha humbly prayed to him: "O best brahmin, be merciful to me and lift the curse! Oh great, it is said that association with pure devotees gives instant results, but their curse takes effect only after seven days. I have been with you for fifty-seven years, O Lord, so be merciful to me!" "Medhavi Muni replied, "O gentle lady, what can I do? You have destroyed all my austerities. But even though you have done this sinful deed, I shall tell you a way you can be released from my wrath. The dark fortnight of Chaitra month is a good Ekadashi which removes all sins. Its name is Papamochani, O beautiful one, and anyone who fasts on this holy day will be completely freed from birth in the satanic form." "With these words the sage immediately left for his father's ashram. Seeing him enter the Hermitage, Chyavana Muni said, "O son, by acting unlawfully you have wasted the wealth of your penances and austerities." Medhavi replied, "O father, kindly reveal what penance I must do to remove the terrible sin I committed in private while with the dancing Manjughosha.
Chyavana Muni replied: "Dear son, you must fast on the Ekadashi of Papamochani which comes in the Dark forntnight of Chaitra month, after two weeks. It wipes out all sins, no matter how serious. Medhavi followed his father's advice and fasted on Papamochani. Thus all his sins were destroyed and he was again filled with great merits. Manjughosha also observed the same fast and got rid of Hobgoblin's curse. Having once again ascended to the heavenly realms, she also returned to her previous position.
Lomasha Rishi continued, “So, O king, the great benefit of the Papamochani Ekadashi fast is that whoever does it with faith and devotion, his sins are completely destroyed. Sri Krishna concluded, "O King Yudhishthira, whoever reads or hears the katha or story of the Ekadashi of Papamochani gets the same merit that he would get by donating a thousand cows in charity, and he also nullifies the sinful reactions that he may cause by killing a brahmana or by killing the embryo by abortion, drinking alcohol or having sex with his guru's wife. It is an immeasurable benefit to properly celebrate this holy day of Papamochani Ekadashi, which is so dear and grateful to me.
Thus ends the account of the glories of Chaitra-Krishna Ekadashi or Papamochan Ekadashi in the Bhavishya-uttara Purana.
