- Ekadashi Vrat Kathas
Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The Kahta or story of this Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:
Yudhishthira Maharaj inquired, "Mighty Madhusudana, I beseech you to disclose the name of the Ekadashi situated within the illuminated fortnight of Ashvina (corresponding to September - October). Kindly bestow your divine wisdom upon me."
In response, the Supreme Personality, Lord Sri Krishna, conveyed, "Great king, lend me your ears, for I shall elucidate the exalted significance of Pashankusha Ekadashi, a day renowned for expunging transgressions. On this hallowed occasion, the prescribed adoration of Lord Padmanabha, the lotus-naveled Lord Vishnu, yields the fruits of worldly desires and eventual liberation. A mere prostration before Lord Vishnu can amass spiritual merit akin to that acquired through protracted and stringent penance. Remarkably, even those who have committed countless heinous transgressions can evade punitive consequences by offering obeisance to Lord Sri Hari, who absolves all sins."
"The spiritual rewards typically gained by embarking on pilgrimages to the sacred Tirthas on this earthly realm can be obtained simply by invoking the holy names of Lord Vishnu. Those who chant these sanctified names, such as Rama, Vishnu, Janardana, or Krishna, particularly on Ekadashi, are exempted from encountering Yamaraj, the ruler of death's penal realm. Devotees who faithfully fast on Pashankusha (Papankusha) Ekadashi, cherished by me, are likewise shielded from that dreadful destination."
"Both a Vaishnava who disparages Lord Shiva and a Shaivite who censures me inevitably descend into perdition. The merit garnered from one hundred horse sacrifices and one hundred Rajasurya sacrifices does not equal even one-sixteenth of the merit amassed by a devotee who observes Ekadashi fasting. No higher accolade exists than that conferred upon those who observe this sacred day, Ekadashi, the day belonging to the lotus-naveled Lord, Padmanabha."
"King, a person remains ensnared in sin and bereft of emancipation until they observe a fast on Papankusha Ekadashi. This fast represents the highest spiritual attainment across all three realms. Anyone who observes it steadfastly evades the clutches of Yamaraj. Those desiring liberation, elevation to heavenly realms, well-being, affluence, and sustenance should dutifully fast on Pashankusha Ekadashi. Let it be known that neither the holy waters of the Ganges, the sacred sites of Gaya, Kashi, and Pushkara, nor the revered Kurukshetra can rival the auspicious merits bestowed by Papankusha Ekadashi."
"O benevolent Maharaj Yudhishthira, the guardian of the Earth, following the daytime observance of Ekadashi, devotees should remain vigilant through the night, immersed in the adulation, invocation, and service of the Lord. By doing so, they readily ascend to the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu. Notably, a single observance of this Ekadashi absolves ten generations each on the maternal, paternal, and conjugal lines. All these ancestors reclaim their original, four-armed celestial forms, adorned in resplendent yellow attire and exquisite garlands. They travel to the divine realm mounted on the back of Garuda, the legendary adversary of serpents. This constitutes the blessing bestowed upon my devotee for the proper observance of one Papankusha Ekadashi."
"O illustrious sovereign, whether one is a child, an adolescent, or an elder, partaking in the Papankusha Ekadashi liberates them from transgressions and shields them from the anguish of a rebirth in hell. Those who fast on Papankusha Ekadashi find themselves exempt from the punitive realm of Yamaraj. Whoever bestows gold, sesame seeds, fertile land, cows, grains, drinking water, an umbrella, or a pair of shoes on this most sanctified of days need not fear the dominion of Yamaraj, the dispenser of retribution. However, should an inhabitant of Earth neglect spiritual actions, particularly Ekadashi fasting, their breath is as futile as the wheezing of a blacksmith's bellows."
"O preeminent ruler, especially on this Papankusha Ekadashi, even those of modest means should first cleanse themselves and then offer charity commensurate with their capacities. Those who engage in acts of virtue, such as the construction of communal ponds, rest areas, gardens, or dwellings, are absolved of Yamaraj's sanctions. It is essential to recognize that those who lead long lives, amass wealth, hold elevated status, or enjoy sound health have assuredly performed such virtuous deeds in their past lives. Yet, those who observe Papankusha Ekadashi are destined for the supreme abode of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu."
In this manner, we conclude the narration of the extraordinary virtues of Pashankusha Ekadashi, also known as Papankusha Ekadashi or Ashwina-Shukla Ekadashi, as documented in the Brahma-vaivarta Purana.
