Parama Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The Kahta or story of this Parama Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:
In the presence of Sri Yudhishthira Maharaja, the eldest of the Pandavas, an inquisitive inquiry was made to the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna. Yudhishthira inquired about a specific Ekadasi occurring during the dark fortnight (krishna paksha) of the extra, leap year month of Purushottama. The king sought not only the name and significance of this Ekadasi but also the proper process to observe it in a manner that would yield maximum benefits. With humility and devotion, he urged the Supreme Lord to narrate all the details.
In response to Yudhishthira's earnest query, Lord Sri Krishna revealed the auspicious day's name as Parama Ekadasi. This Ekadasi holds immense spiritual merit, bestowing blessings of a fulfilling life on Earth and ultimately leading to liberation, release from the cycle of birth and death. Lord Krishna further emphasized the importance of wholeheartedly worshiping Him, the Supreme Being, with love and devotion during this sacred day.
Sri Krishna proceeded to narrate a fascinating historical account, imparted to Him by a great sage residing in the city of Kampilya. The tale revolved around a virtuous brahmin named Sumedha and his devoted wife, Pavitra, who encountered severe financial hardships due to the consequences of past life karma. Despite their dire circumstances, Pavitra selflessly served her husband and any guests who graced their humble abode. She convinced Sumedha not to leave her in search of wealth but to remain united, supporting each other through their adversities.
Moved by the couple's devotion and sincerity, Sri Krishna continued to share the sage Kaundinya's visit to their home. Sumedha and Pavitra greeted the sage with great respect and offered their obeisances. Seeing their devotion and dedication, Kaundinya Muni was pleased and blessed them with his wisdom.
The couple humbly sought the sage's guidance to overcome their poverty and find a way to attain prosperity and wealth. Kaundinya compassionately advised them to observe the Parama Ekadasi fast, which falls during the dark fortnight of the extra, leap-year month. He elucidated the specific rituals and stressed the importance of observing Pancharatrika fast for five days following the Ekadasi.
Following Kaundinya's instructions, Sumedha and Pavitra observed the Parama Ekadasi and the Pancharatrika fasts with utmost devotion and determination. Their sincere dedication to the sacred practices pleased Lord Hari, and as a result, the couple's fortunes began to change dramatically.
In a divine turn of events, a handsome prince, on the orders of Lord Brahma, appeared before them. He presented them with a magnificent, exquisitely furnished house and an entire village to sustain their livelihood. The prince praised their austerity and self-control, which had earned them such blessings.
Overwhelmed by the prince's benevolence and the change in their fortune, Sumedha and Pavitra expressed their gratitude and contentment. The couple joyfully enjoyed the newfound prosperity and lived harmoniously together, relishing the blessings bestowed upon them.
As time passed, Sumedha and Pavitra's journey on this earthly plane culminated in liberation. Their unwavering devotion and observance of the Parama Ekadasi and Pancharatrika fasts elevated them to the divine abode of Lord Vishnu.
Moved by the significance of this sacred Ekadasi, Lord Krishna extolled its virtues to Yudhishthira. He compared the merits of observing Parama Ekadasi to various virtuous deeds, charity, and pilgrimages to holy places. The Lord emphasized that fasting on this day and adhering to the associated rituals could yield results comparable to a host of other spiritual practices.
Furthermore, Lord Krishna praised the leap year's extra month as being particularly auspicious. He encouraged observing the Ekadasis and Pancharatrika fasts during this time to attain immense spiritual merit.
Consequently, King Yudhishthira and his brothers, along with their esteemed wife, Draupadi, earnestly followed Lord Krishna's instructions. They meticulously observed the Parama Ekadasi and the Pancharatrika fasts, wholeheartedly immersing themselves in these sacred practices.
By adhering to these pious observances, the Pandavas and Draupadi enjoyed extraordinary pleasures and spiritual elevation. Their lives became a testament to the efficacy of observing the Parama Ekadasi and the Pancharatrika fasts. In the end, they attained liberation, transcending the cycle of birth and death and ascending to the divine realm.
Thus, Lord Sri Krishna's enlightening narration of the glories of Parama Ekadasi, the sacred day that occurs during the dark fortnight of the extra, leap-year month, concludes. Through this narration from the Skanda Purana, the significance of observing this Ekadasi and its accompanying Pancharatrika fasts is revealed as a powerful means of spiritual advancement and ultimate liberation.
