Parsva Ekadashi Vrat Katha

The Kahta or story of this Parsva Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:

Sri Yudhishthira Maharaja inquired of Lord Sri Krishna about a specific Ekadasi that occurs in the light fortnight of the Bhadrapada month (August-September "Hrishikesha mase"). He asked for the name of this Ekadasi, the Deity to be worshipped, and the merits gained by observing it. Lord Sri Krishna, addressing Yudhishthira, revealed that this Ekadasi is known as Vamana Ekadasi and confers both great merit and liberation from material bondage. It is also called Jayanti Ekadasi because it eliminates past sinful reactions. The mere hearing of its glories absolves one from previous wrongdoings. This Ekadasi is so auspicious that it equals the merit earned from performing a horse sacrifice and offers liberation effortlessly. Therefore, those seeking freedom from the material world should observe Vamana Ekadasi.

During this sacred fast, a Vaishnava should lovingly worship the Supreme Lord in His form as Vamandev, the dwarf incarnation, whose eyes resemble lotus petals. By doing so, they worship all other Deities, including Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, and at death, they undoubtedly attain the abode of Sri Hari. There is no superior Ekadasi to this one in all the three worlds.

The significance of this Ekadasi lies in its celebration of the day when Lord Vishnu, while asleep, turns over to His other side, hence its name Parivartinii Ekadasi.

Yudhishthira inquired further, seeking clarity on how the Supreme Lord sleeps, what happens to other living entities during His slumber, how Lord Krishna bound Bali Daityaraj (Bali Maharaja), and how to please the brahmanas. He also sought guidance on observing Chaturmasya, as mentioned in the Chaturmasya-mahatmya of the Bhavishya Purana.

In response, Lord Sri Krishna recounted a historical event from TretA-yuga when there was a pious demon king named Bali. Despite his demon lineage, Bali was devoted to the Lord, sang Vedic hymns, and performed fire sacrifices to please the Lord. He respected brahmins and engaged them in daily sacrifices. Bali even had a confrontation with Indra, defeating him and taking over his celestial kingdom. Distressed by this, Indra, other demigods, and sages approached Lord Krishna, seeking His intervention. They worshiped Lord Krishna and His spiritual master, Brihaspati, and Krishna agreed to appear as the dwarf Vamanadev, His fifth incarnation, to help them.

Yudhishthira further inquired about the specifics of how Lord Krishna, appearing as a dwarf Brahmin, conquered Bali Maharaja. Lord Krishna explained that when He requested only three steps of land as charity from Bali, the king agreed without hesitation. However, as soon as Bali made the promise, Lord Krishna's form began to expand immensely. He covered the entire Earth with one step, the Bhuvarloka with the second, and so on until the entire material creation, including all the planets, was encompassed by His gigantic form. Seeing this wondrous display, the demigods offered prayers.

Lord Krishna then placed His foot on Bali's head and sent him to Patalaloka. In return for his humility, Krishna decided to reside permanently in Bali's palace. On Parivartinii Ekadasi, Bali installed a Deity of Lord Krishna in his residence. Until Haribodhinii Ekadasi in the month of Karttika, Lord Krishna sleeps in the ocean of milk, accumulating immense merit during this period.

Observing Parivartinii Ekadasi is highly purifying, cleansing one of all sinful reactions. On this day, devotees should worship Lord Trivikrama, Vamanadeva, to mark the occasion of Lord Krishna turning over in His sleep. As a simple observance, offering yogurt mixed with rice and silver to a qualified person and remaining awake throughout the night can free one from all material conditioning. Such observance bestows happiness in this world and a place in the kingdom of God in the afterlife. Just hearing this narration with devotion can lead to the abode of the demigods, as its power is equivalent to performing a thousand horse sacrifices.

In conclusion, the glories of Parivartinii Ekadasi, or Vamana Ekadasi, in the month of Bhadrapada, as described in the Brahma-vaivarta Purana, celebrate the significance of this sacred fast, the turning of Lord Vishnu in His sleep, and the historical event of Lord Krishna's pastime with Bali Maharaja. This Ekadasi holds immense spiritual power and blessings for those who observe it with devotion.
