Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha

The Kahta or story of this Putrada Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:

Experiencing the significance of Ekadashi, the skilled archer Arjuna spoke up before Lord Krishna, expressing his delight in hearing virtuous stories. His curiosity grew, and he yearned to know more. Arjuna's query to Lord Krishna was centered around a specific Ekadashi falling in the bright fortnight of the month of Shravan. He wished to know its name, the method of fasting associated with it, the deity venerated during this time, and the rewards reaped through its observance.

Lord Krishna, in response, conveyed that merely listening to the narrative of this Ekadashi could yield rewards akin to those amassed through timeless sacrificial rites. The story unfolded in a distant past when Mahishmati, a city, was ruled by a king named Raj, who experienced profound sadness due to his childlessness. Despite his just governance and benevolent demeanor, the absence of a child left him unfulfilled.

The king embarked on numerous endeavors to beget an heir, but his efforts ended in futility. Seeking guidance, his ministers journeyed to a forest and sought counsel from venerable sages. Amid these sages was Lomash Rishi, a sage of great wisdom and spiritual insight. The ministers presented their predicament before Lomash Rishi, who was known for his deep understanding of spiritual matters.

In response, Lomash Rishi extended his compassionate attention and acknowledged the ministers' respectful demeanor. He encouraged them to explain their purpose for seeking his guidance. He affirmed his willingness to help, as it was his belief that their bodies existed to serve others. This benevolent attitude further deepened their trust in Lomash Rishi's wisdom.

In response to the ministers' inquiry, Lomash Rishi engaged in contemplation, delving into the king's previous lifetimes. After a brief period of introspection, he offered an illuminating revelation. He revealed that in a former life, the king had been inclined towards wrongdoings and had committed numerous transgressions. One notable incident involved a past Ekadashi falling in the bright fortnight of the month of Jyestha. On that day, the king, stricken by hunger, denied water to a parched cow, opting to drink water himself.

This unkind act of depriving a thirsty cow on Ekadashi day had generated karmic repercussions, resulting in the king's present childlessness. Lomash Rishi, compassionate in his wisdom, provided a remedy to dissolve the past-life transgressions. He prescribed that both the king and his subjects observe a rigorous fast and night vigil on Putrada Ekadashi, situated in the bright fortnight of the Shravan month. By dedicating the merits of this fast to the king, his sins would be expunged, thereby paving the way for the birth of an heir.

Taking Lomash Rishi's counsel to heart, the ministers expressed their gratitude and returned to their kingdom with his blessings. The king, acting on the advice, observed the fast on Putrada Ekadashi and received the blessings of the virtuous practice. The outcome of this observance was the queen's conception and subsequent birth of a radiant son.

The Ekadashi that facilitated this divine blessing came to be known as Putrada Ekadashi, signifying its potency in fulfilling the desire for offspring. Anyone aspiring for progeny is advised to observe this sacred fast. This narrative underscores the significance of refraining from sinful actions, as even seemingly inconsequential misdeeds can carry forward into future lives, causing suffering. The tale further emphasizes the importance of unwavering devotion to the divine and the practice of compassion towards all sentient beings.
