Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat Katha -- Ekadashi Vrat Kathas
The Story or Katha of this Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:
In the Satya Yuga there lived a terrible demon called Mura. Mura was very strong and terrifying. By his extraordinary powers, Mura defeated not only the god Indra but also many other gods and observed the ruling Indra Loka. To end Mura's tyranny, all the gods approached Lord Shiva for help. Lord Shiva advised them to approach Lord Vishnu, the master of all the three lokas.
Lord Vishnu decided to defeat the demon Mura to help the gods. Lord Vishnu and the gods reached Chandravati, the ruling city of Mura. Lord Vishnu was on one side and Demon Mura with his entire army was on the other side. According to the story, Lord Vishnu destroyed the entire army of Mura with his Sudarshan Chakra and divine Gadala, but all His weapons proved ineffective against the power of the demon Mura. Neither His Sudarshan Chakra nor His Gada could cut the head or break the neck of the demon Mura.
The protracted battle became Malla Yuddha, one-on-one combat without weapons. The battle between Lord Vishnu and Mura is believed to have lasted for 10,000 years. Seeing the end of this endless battle, Lord Vishnu stopped the battle and went to Badrikashram to rest in Hemvati Caves.
Demon Mura chased Lord Vishnu and reached Badrikashram. Demon Mura found Lord Vishnu sleeping and thought it would be a great opportunity to kill Lord Vishnu. A powerful girl was born from the divine body of Lord Vishnu to fight against such satanic feeling in Demon Mura. The girl was bright, powerful and adorned with all kinds of weapons to protect Lord Vishnu. This feminine power of Lord Vishnu defeated Mura in battle and killed him after placing her foot on his chest and cutting off his head.
All the gods began to praise the girl for her extraordinary strength. When Lord Vishnu woke up, he did not know his power and demanded that the girl show herself. The girl presented herself as the effulgence of Lord Vishnu himself, born of Lord Vishnu's Yoga Maya. Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased with her feminine power and asked her to seek reward for her great work.
The girl pleaded, "Please give me strength so that anyone who fasts for me may be freed from all sins and attain salvation. Please bless me so that I may excel in all pilgrimages and give Dharma, Dhanya and Moksha to my devotees."
Lord Vishnu blessed the girl and said, "You are known as Ekadashi because you were born on Ekadashi Tith. You are worshiped not only by humans but also by gods in all yugas. Nothing would make me happier than fasting on Ekadashi. Your devotees enjoy all worldly pleasures and attain salvation at the end of their lives.
A devotee of Lord Vishnu who hears day and night all these auspicious themes about God from the mouth of another devotee is elevated to the Lord's planet and lives there for ten million kalpas. And one who hears even one sentence of the glories of Ekadasi is freed from reactions to sins like killing a brahmin. There is no doubt about it. For all eternity, there is no better way to worship Lord Vishnu than fasting on Ekadashi.
