Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat Katha -
- Ekadashi Vrat Kathas
Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The Story or Katha of this Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:
Sri Yudhisthira Maharaj said, “O Vasudeva, I offer you my humble obeisances.
Now describe to me the Ekadashi of the dark fortnight (krishna paksha) of the month of Vaisakha (April-May), including its special benefits and effects."
Lord Sri Krishna replied, “O King, in this world and the next, Varathini Ekadasi is the most auspicious and magnanimous Ekadashi, which occurs during the dark fortnight of the month of Vaisakha.
Anyone who observes a complete fast on this holy day will have his sins completely removed, will have lasting happiness and all happiness. Fasting on Varuthini Ekadas hi makes even an unhappy woman happy. To all who observe it, this Ekadashi gives material enjoyment in this life and liberation after the death of this present body. It destroys the sins of all and saves people from the misery of repeated rebirths. King Mandhata was released by properly observing this Ekadashi.
Its observance also benefited many other kings like Maharaja Dhundhumara of the Ikshvaku dynasty who was freed from the curse of leprosy that Lord Shiva had imposed on him.
Whatever merit one obtains by penances and austerities performed for ten thousand years, one who observes Varuthini Ekadasi attains the same.
A person who observes this Ekadasi with love and devotion gets the merit of donating a large amount of gold during the Kurukshetra solar eclipse and is sure to achieve his goals in this life as well as the next. In short, this Ekadashi is pure and very invigorating and destroyer of all sins.
Better than giving horses to charity is giving elephants and better than giving elephants is giving land.
But better than giving land is giving sesame seeds, and better than that is the giving of gold.
Even better than giving gold is giving grains as food to all the ancestors, demigods (devas) and humans as they are satisfied by eating grains.
Therefore, there is no better charitable gift than this, past, present or future.
However, experts have reported that giving a young maiden to a deserving person is like donating food to charity. Further, Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, said that giving cows in charity is equivalent to giving grains for food.
Still better than all these charities is the teaching of spiritual knowledge to the ignorant.
However, all the merit that can be gained by performing all these acts of charity is achieved by the one who fasts on the Ekadashi of Varuthini. He who lives on the wealth of his daughters will suffer in hell until the whole universe is flooded, O Bharata.
Therefore, special care must be taken not to use the daughter's property. O best kings, any householder who out of greed takes away his daughter's property, tries to sell his daughter, or takes money from the man to whom he gave his daughter in marriage, such a family member becomes a lowly cat in his next life.
Hence it is said that whoever presents a maiden adorned with various ornaments as a holy charity and also gives a dowry along with it, receives a favor which even the chief secretary of the Yamaraj, Chitragupta, cannot describe.
But the same merit can easily be attained by one who fasts on Varuthini Ekadashi.
The following things should be given up on Dashami, the day before Ekadashi:
Eating on metal plates, eating any kind of uradahl, eating red lentils, chickpeas, kondo (a grain similar to poppy seeds or agarpan seeds eaten mainly by the poor), eating spinach, eating honey, eating at someone else's/home, eating more than once and engage in any kind of sex.
In the case of Ekadas itself, you should give up:
gambling, sports, sleeping during the day, betel nut and its leaf, brushing the teeth, spreading rumours, finding fault, talking to the mentally depraved, anger and lying. On Dwadashi, the day after Ekadashi, the following should be avoided:
eating on metal plates, eating urad dahl, red lentils or honey, lying down, intense exercise or exertion, eating more than once, any sexual activity, shaving the body, face or head, applying oils to the body and eating in a foreign home. .
Lord Sri Krishna continued, "Anyone who observes Varuthini Ekadashi in this way is freed from all sinful reactions and returns to his eternal spiritual abode. He who worships Lord Janardana (Krishna) while awake during the night on that Ekadashi is also freed from all his sins and reaches the spiritual abode.
Therefore, O king, one who fears his accumulated sins and their reactions, and therefore death itself, must very strictly observe Varuthini Ekadashi by fasting.
"Finally, O noble Yudhisthira, he who hears or recites the praises of that holy Varuthini Ekadashi gets his due merit by donating a thousand cows in charity, and finally returns home to Vaikunthas, the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu.
