- Ekadashi Vrat Kathas
Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The Story or Katha of this Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat is as follows:
Yudhisthira Maharaj said, "O Lord Sri Krishna, O glorious son of Vasudeva, be kind to me and describe the Ekadashi that occurs in the dark fortnight of the month of Phalguna (February-March)"
Lord Sri Krishna replied, "O Yudhisthira , king of kings, I am pleased to tell you about this great fast known as Vijaya Ekadashi. He who observes it will surely succeed in this life as well as in the next. All the sins of one who fasts on this Ekadashi and hears its sublime glory will be destroyed.
“Narada Muni once asked Lord Brahma, who is sitting on a lotus flower, about Vijaya Ekadashi. Sri Narada said, "O best of the demigods, kindly tell me the merits of faithfully observing Vijaya Ekadashi."
"The great father of the Universe, Brahma replied: "My dear son, this oldest fast day is pure and removes all sins. I have never revealed this to anyone till today but you will surely understand that this Ekadasi will give the result as its name suggests... (Vijaya means Victorious).
When Lord Rama was banished to the forest for fourteen years, He, Goddess Sita and her divine brother Lakshmana remained as mendicants in Panchavati. Then the demon Ravana abducted Sita, and Lord Rama became filled with anguish, like an ordinary man. While searching for his beloved consort, the Lord met the dying Jatayu and then killed his enemy Kabandha. The great vulture devotee, Jatayu returned to Vaikuntha after telling Rama how Ravana kidnapped His beloved Sita.
"Later Lord Rama and Monkey King Sugriva became friends. Together they gathered a large army of monkeys and bears and sent their minister Hanumanji to Sri Lanka where he was able to see Janaki (Srimati Sita devi) in the forest of Ashoka. He conveyed Lord Rama's message and showed the ring which proved his authenticity for rendering such great service to the Supreme Lord Sri Rama. "With the help of Sugriva, Lord Rama went towards Sri Lanka. Having reached the shore of the ocean with an army of monkeys, He realized that the water was unusually deep and hostile. He said to Lakshmana, "Oh, son of Sumitra! how can we earn enough merit to cross this vast ocean, the immeasurable abode of Varuna Deva? I see no easy way to cross it, for it is full of sharks and other wild water creatures."
"Lakshmana replied, "O best being, O origin of all devas, O progenitor, the great sage Bakad Albhya lives on an island which is only four miles from here. O Raghava, he has seen many Brahmas come and go, so old and wise is he. Let us go to him, take his darshan (audience) and ask him how we can safely reach our destination."
"Thus Rama and Lakshmana went to the humble ashram of the incomparable Bakad Albhya Muni. Approaching him, those two lords bowed before him with reverence as if he were another Vishnu. But Bakad Albhya immediately realized that Sri Rama was actually the Supreme Personality, a deity who appeared on earth for his own reasons and behaved exactly like a human.
"Rama," said Bakad albhya, "O best of men, why have you come to my humble abode?"
"The Lord replied: "O mighty twice-born Brahmin, I have come here alonhg with my phalanx of monkey and bear warriors to cross the sea and conquer Lanka and its horde of demons led by Ravana. O greatest of sages, be merciful to me and tell me how I can cross this vast ocean. That is why I have come to your ashram today."
"The sage said, "O Lord Sri Rama, I will tell you about all the highest fasts by which you will surely defeat Ravana and be honored forever. Now please listen with full attention.
"On the day before Ekadashi make a water pot of gold or silver or even copper. Even clay is suitable if these metals are not available. Fill the pot with clean water and then decorate nicely with mango leaves. Cover it and place it near the holy altar on the hill of seven grains (the seven grains are barley, wheat, rice, corn, chickpeas, flowers and dahl or peas). Now take your morning bath, decorate the water pot with flower baths and sandalwood paste and place a hollow lid of barley, pomegranate and coconut over the pot. Now worship the deity in the form of a water pot with great love and devotion and offer Him incense, sandalwood paste, flowers, a ghee lamp and a plate of rich food. Stay awake that night by this holy pot. Place the golden shell of Lord Sri Narayanan on the lid filled with barley.
"When Ekadashi dawns, take morning bath and then decorate the water jar with good sandalwood paste and garlands. Then re-worship the pot with high quality incense, lamps, sandal paste and flowers dipped in sandal paste and then place various cooked foods, pomegranate and coconut in front of the water pot with devotion. Then stay up all night.
"When Dwadashi dawns, take the tub of water to the bank of a holy river or even to the bank of a small pond. Having again properly worshiped it, O king of kings, offer it with all the above ingredients to a pure-hearted Brahmin, an expert in the Vedic sciences. If you and your military leaders observe Vijaya Ekadas in this way, you will surely win in every way."
"Lord Sri Ramachandra Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, did exactly as Bakad Albhya Muni ordered, and thus He defeated everyone. Similarly, anyone who observes Vijaya Ekadashi in this way will always be victorious in this mortal world and will live forever in a realm free from anxiety after leaving this world.
Thus ends the narration of the glories of Phalguna-krsna Ekadashi or Vijaya Ekadashi, from the Skanda Purana.
